Above the main gate to the city is a quote from the German humanist, Sebastian Münster, in 1552. Rough translation: The people of Semur are greatly pleased to make the acquaintance of strangers.
Here's a very old door. Note the shape of the carved stone above the door — just like those windows in the front wall of the home of Jean and Nicole in Flavigny.
Nicole and I ducked into the cathedral of Semur.
My camera doesn't capture the brilliance of the light and color of the windows, piercing through the cold gray stone interior. Those gray stone walls used to be painted with designs of bright colors. Just a few remnants of that paint remain.
When we stepped back outside the cathedral, we found this car parked right at the foot of the church steps.
I cracked a joke about the car belonging to the priest, but just then a family with small children swarmed around the car and climbed in, drove away.
Strolling through the streets of Semur, I felt that I could me on the movie set of the film Chocolat. Just take away all those automobiles...
In the photo below, you can see just a bit of one of the walls around the city.
Later in the day, we drove to the nearby town of Venary-les-Laumes to do some shopping. First we went to the butcher shop, le Boucherie. There was a beautiful array of meats encased in pastry.
And, of course, sausage.
Then we went to the supermarket. Note the pull-behind shopping cart!
We stopped to buy essence at a gas station. How much does it cost? About €50 to fill the tank on a Volkswagon.

"The moldy sausage is crazy." says Noah. :)
